I'll try your idea. After I posted this I called AR and to my surprise they were supportive of NOS tubes. (I kind of expected them to shut down saying: we don't warrant performance w/non sovteks)They had the same suggestions as you. When I look at the schematic, the heaters for V1 & V2 are in parellel with the mute/timer circuitry. I bet it is just drawing too much current. Thank you for your suggestions. I'll get to the bottom of this.
