Re: ARC LS-16

Terry - I have an LS-16 and have listened to it for about 10 months or so. I have recently retubed it with a 6H23 Sovtek version of the stock 6922, which added a smidgen of warmth. This is my 5th ARC preamp since about 1988 and I like it better than the others in terms of resolution and imaging. It gets out of the way of the music. I will say system and cable matching is an important consideration. I have been auditioning the Acoustic Zen Silver Mark 2 between CDP and LS-16 and AZ Matrix Ref. Mark 2 between pre and power and have had just a bit a glare at the top end on some recordings. I did not notice it before the cable switch and even though I burned them in for about 100 hours, it may be that the cables need even more time for break in. The LS-16 is not at all "tubey" sounding, but I think it does have many of the virtues typically associated with tubes. I am thinking about retubing it with some NOS Amperex to add a little sweetness, but that is purely my listening choice. As you know, you just have to give it some listening time in your system to see if it is a fit. I have been an Audio Research fan for years and have been pleased with all the pieces I have owned.

Happy listening and enjoy the music.

George
