Thanks for your ideas. From what I had read before the 7189A was the tube to avoid in replacing EL84s but 7189s were supposed to be OK and the tubes I put in were 7189s not 7189A's. I am aware of the need for matched quads and the tubes in question were within 3% of each other - is this not close enough? I think you are probably right about the cap being a replacement for one of the caps in the can as one of them is not connected to anything, although there are indications that it was once used.Do you think the Power transformer or other parts of the power supply could be comprimised?
