Titantubes,Let me to simplify this tubo-life for you. After having a large box of all imaginary 12AX7 I concluded that there are the only 3 types to 12AX7 that an audio person should have and then to retire form the entire concept of the tube rolling:
1) The original Telefunken with the smooth palate as the most universal and the most all around properly sounding tube. (~$60-$90)
2) The original Telefunken with the ribbed palate to kick ass with some Gipsy sound (good for some special multi-amp applications or to “cure†some dead electronics/speakers/cable by the “reanimationsâ€) (~$40-$60)
3) All the rest tubes. (Should be $10 for any of them)
I would not recommend looking for specifically “warm†tubes becose beside what you call “warmth†they do some other thighs inappropriately. Get the Telefunken and “do†the “warmth†somewhere else.
Rgs,
The CatPS: Some different vintages of Telefunken do sound different.
PSS: Be careful with 5751 in some situation they are not as fine and it looks.
