Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

No kidding...

Titantubes,

Let me to simplify this tubo-life for you. After having a large box of all imaginary 12AX7 I concluded that there are the only 3 types to 12AX7 that an audio person should have and then to retire form the entire concept of the tube rolling:

1) The original Telefunken with the smooth palate as the most universal and the most all around properly sounding tube. (~$60-$90)

2) The original Telefunken with the ribbed palate to kick ass with some Gipsy sound (good for some special multi-amp applications or to “cure” some dead electronics/speakers/cable by the “reanimations”) (~$40-$60)

3) All the rest tubes. (Should be $10 for any of them)

I would not recommend looking for specifically “warm” tubes becose beside what you call “warmth” they do some other thighs inappropriately. Get the Telefunken and “do” the “warmth” somewhere else.

Rgs,
The Cat

PS: Some different vintages of Telefunken do sound different.
PSS: Be careful with 5751 in some situation they are not as fine and it looks.
