Don,Wow! Thank-you for the very thoughtful and thorough response. I am at work right now (my own time) and will e-mail you, from home, later. The 6550's sound much more open than the EL34's. I definately prefer the sound of the 6550's and am suprised at how much better the amp sounds. I have found that 48ma's work well with the 6550's. I have found, although my time with the tubes is limited, that anything lower than 45ma and the tubes start to sound a little sluggish and less detailed (does this make sense?). I actually tried the tubes at 55ma last night, but wasn't able to listen for very long or very loudly. Initial impressions were good. Do you think 55ma is too high? At 48ma, the PT runs quite hot. I can hold my hand on it, but the thought does go through my mind that if I held it there for an extended time, that it may burn! It is not so hot that you can't touch it i.e. I can hold my hand on it, but it is quite hot. My speakers are 88 spl, 4 ohms (Duntech PCL 25's). I run a biwired set of 8TC for the bass and 4TC for the treble. My room is about 13'x14' and I listen to a range of music, mainly female vocals and classic rock.
