when people say that they are the best current production, that is not really much of a recommendation, as I have never heard a current production 12AX7 that I enjoyed as much as even a middle level NOS tube.For instance, the Sovtek LPS got raves for a while, but I found it to be mediocre at best-this was in listening to music, not marveling at how quiet it was. I don't care if a tube is stone cold quiet if it doesn't have positive sonic performance otherwise, and most of these new, "carefully selected quiet" tubes just don't have good sonic performance relative to the old jobs. Experiment, for a few bucks you might find a really nice tube. I found some OLD blackplate GE for really cheap that worked really well and stomp, sonically speaking, all new-pro tubes that I have listened to. Look around.
