What is the difference between a smooth plate and ribbed plate tube?. Are the plates the 2 grey or black vertial pieces of metal inside a tube or are they the round aluminum looking pieces of metal with little points turned down?

What is the round wire in the top of tubes that looks like a halo?
In an amperex tuve I have the "halo" is square. All others that I have it is rouund.
