Well, I agree with Jack, if you want a "true tube sound" I have to assume you want overly sweet mids, bloated bass and truncated highs. Get an old Conrad Johnson unit then. If you want accuracy then there are several good choices. If you need some minor tweaking to get rid of the overly analytical quality of the Levinson stuff then that's another story. Here's my impressions of the units you mentioned:
Conrad Johnson PV12 - more neutral than the old stuff but still a house sound of sorts.
Sonic Frontiers Line 1 - overly analytical, for tubes - I think you'll be going more in the direction that you want to avoid.
BAT VK3i - good choice, but a used VK5i is better.
Audio Research LS-7 - I prefer the LS15 overall, but you can still do better than this.
I'd check out a used CAT, if you can find one, or an Audio Prism Mantissa. I would also explore some of the better "kit" or private label preamps like Doc Bottleheads stuff. Then once you've made this purchase and integrated it into your system, so out and get a decent turntable :->
Enjoy,
Bob
