KC,The 1 million dollar question. Because it takes about a million bucks to buy all the vintage NOS varieties to find the one you like.
Depends on your ears.
For guitar amps, I've used and like the JAN-Raytheon 6SN7WGT brown base babies the most. But, the Sylvania 1960's vintage 6SN7GTA aren't too bad, either.
I have tried the 1940's JAN-6SN7W Sylvania metal based tubes. They are great but tend to get a little too microphonic, for guitar amps. But, might be your cup of tea, for hi-fi. Same with the mil spec VT-231 varieties.
Right now, trying some GE red base 5692 in an Ampeg amp. A little lower mu, but great tone. Well built and quiet.
TungSol JAN 6SN7GT (mid 1940's) are tough tubes with great bass.
I'll warn you now. You ask 12 people this question and you'll get 12 different answers. So, you have to sort out what you want out of your system. What is important to you. Because these babies cost a lot of moolah, these days. Too much, to be experimenting with a different brand, each week, in my opinion (read: my bank account).
