stepped volume controls w/out driving yourself crazy. i've been using remote pre's for the past ten years. but my search for a new tube pre leads me to looking at non remote designs for the sonic advantage. For example First Sound or AI L2. Laugh if you want, but right now I'm using a 1980's vintage 3 head analog cassette deck as a temporary line stage- and it sounds like a passive pre with adjustable gain.
Gives me practice at living w/out a remote to boot.
