Re: tube pushes(addendum)

I will embelish what the previous posters have said.

"Maggies" are power hungry, but tube friendly. It seems contradictory; however, it is true. "Maggies" need plenty of power driving them. However, "Maggies" have a tube friendly FLAT 4 Ohm impedance curve free of significant dips. As long as power O/P is adequate, "Maggies" and tube power amps are a good combination.

New 100 WPC tube power amps like the ARC VT100 and the SFI Power 2 are EXPENSIVE, about $5000. A project of acquisition and refurbishment ala Jim McShane of a vintage Harmon-Kardon Citation 2 will be somewhere under $2000. A Citation 2 refurbed ala McShane makes 60 WPC continuous and 130 WPC instantaneous; that should be plenty powerful driving "Maggies". BTW, the O/P transformers in a Citation 2 are among the finest ever made; considerably better than that in use today.

Given their hunger for power, a practical solution to driving "Maggies" is a good tube preamp feeding a high quality SS or, even better, a hybrid power amp. 200 WPC tube power amps are a $10000 expense.
