Try either the Herron Audio pre-amp ($4,000) or the Wavelength pre-amp ($5,000). I have heard both for extended periods of time and found that they revealed more about the system components than they did themselves. But neither one is below $3K. I have seen the Herron pre-amp selling for around $2,500 used on Audiogon and think there is still one posted.www.wavelengthaudio.com
