Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Heres the Situation!!

24.76.225.146

I have a DIY mono tube amp avec KT66's in push/pull. 6SN7 phase inverter and 12AX7 and 12AU7 input stage. Pre-amp is two 12AX7's and 6C4. Powered by a seperate outboard power supply!! With the amp with the gain at 2:00, I couldn't take the pre-amp volume past 1:00 before distortion. Now the problem is it wasn't very loud. I don't expect screaming loud from this setup but a little more gain would be nice.

I roll all tubes in the pre-amp to 12AX7 (Holland) tubes (one is a 7025 Holland)!

I roll the 6SN7 and I roll 12AX7 and 12AU7 with Mullard ECC83 and 82 in amp...I don't roll the KT66's (not prepared to accept that they are weak yet...thats the next tube test at the local tech/friend with tube tester)!!

Still distorts bad after 1:00 :( ....

Also redo all cables (inter-connects) and fabricate a pair with resistors in series to properly mix stereo to mono for the McIntosh MCD7007 cd player (I used 1K resistor and was suggested to try 2.2K to trim off HF)! Any thoughts on this?

Still Distorts :( (Could it be a faulty cap)?

I am running mono system with two speakers daisy chained in paralell. (I also have a Karlson Ultra-Fidelity for mono 1 channel listening)!! I have two Altec Model Nines (8 ohm speakers) in parallel (4 ohms), but was running them off of a 16ohm tap...DUH!!

Switch it to the 4 ohm tap and what a difference. More balanced tones and half of the distortion, now if only I understood the reason for this?

Well there it is....I can see that a cap job is in the near future for this system, but that is another saga..

P.S. with caps in the pre-amp there is one can, one electrolyptic and a few that are brown and appear coated in a thick shellac/wax (should these be replaced)?
