This review coincides with my impression of the AV-8's. Nice tube sound, not the ultimate in resolution or sense of being there (versus far more costly tube amps), but really impressive bass - phenomenal for a pint size amp. I also felt the transformers looked pretty ugly so I sprayed them gloss black. Looks much nicer now. I also did one internal mod replacing the Bennic coupling caps with Angela Tin Foils - a worthwhile upgrade. If you have never owned tubes and would like a taste, these little guys are a great appetizer. As I write this I am listening to Morton Lauridsen's "Lux AEterna" with pipe organ accompaniment - wonderful deep floor shaking pedal bass, warm principal stops in the manuals, and soaring choral crescendos - all this from the AV-8s driving a pair of Bottlehead Stratght 8's. This hobby is so cool!
