Mystery rustling noise - please help

141.228.156.225

I was listening to some music last night when a rustling noise started to emerge from the left speaker. I initially though someone was in the room screwing up a newspaper.... but rapidly twigged it was coming from the speaker. When I stopped the CD the rustling continued for a good five seconds before dying down.

So I started the CD again and, within a minute, the same rustling noise was back, and again it continued on for a few seconds after I had stopped the CD from playing.

I reduced the volume a tad and carried on listening; the rustling never returned.

This is the first time I'd heard this sound, and also the first time I've allowed myself to turn the volume up now that I have a pair of Avantgarde Duos - their high sensitivity and lack of compression means I could realy go mad, but I respect my neighbours!

Anyway, I was wondering if the noise is as a result of overdriving the amps in some way?

I am using a pair of Quad II valve power amps, and an Audio Research SP8 MKII all-valve preamp. CD is a Trichord Genesis, speakers the aforementioned Duos, speaker cables are Maplin silver/copper hybrids, interconnects by Chord and JVC.

I guess the left power amp is the most likely cause of the problem, but I can't see any signs of imminent valve failure (e.g. blue glow, extra bright valve, whatever) as both left and right amps look the same. I also had a look through the top plate of the SP8 but saw nothing obviously untoward.

Any advice gratefully received.

Peter
