I should have added that one other way in which tube amps can be "adapted" to drive low-Z spkrs is thru use of negative feedback (NFB) at the output. This trick can reduce the output Z of the amp by an order of magnitude, easily, and bring most amps into a range (ca 1 ohm output Z) where they can drive "most" spkrs efficiently. Many OTC amps use NFB. Among OTLs, the Berning ZOTL and Transcendant amps, for example, use NFB and are well-suited for low Z spkr loads. Atma-sphere amps (and other brands) feature set-it-yourself amounts of NFB, too. I just happen to prefer the overall sonics of my Atma amps when no NFB is applied; altho my amps drove the U2 beautifully prior to my acquisition of autoformers, the sound is even better WITH the Zeros in system.
