I used to own the Blue Circe BC-3 Despina. It was a very nice sounding preamp. Very neutral and highly resloving. it replaced my AI modulus 3A. I upgraded the caps in the BC-3 to Auricaps (after talking to Gilbert) and it got even better a lttle more fleshed out and smoother from top to bottom. When I bouth the BC-3 I was torn between the BC-3 and the Erato. I didn't get the Erato because it used a weird tube 27 and 27 golbes which are supposed to sound best can be noisy and microphonic. After keeping the BC-3 for a year, I decided to go for the Erato, when I realized that 27s are plentiful and the parts quality is high and the circuit design is very good. As good as the BC-3 was, and I had no complaints, the Erato is much much better IMHO. It is more musically engaging. It has a fuller and bolder sound whilst being very resolving. Low level detial is superb. It has richer harmonics and its gets the tonality of instruments right. The image is bigger and the music seems to have a more realistic scale. The Erato is a bargain.
