Tubes Asylum Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ |

Well, I ended up buying those old IPC AM-1001 amplifiers that loosecannon posted about last week. I am pretty familiar with all the things I need to do to restore them to working condition, but I have a problem with output impedance. According to the Simplex C60 sound system manual, the AM-1001 has outputs of 12 and 24 ohms. The problem arises in that I plan on using them for 8 ohm speaker loads (Altec A7's), making this 4 ohms under the intended load. I think I have seen this question raised before. Is this a definite, NO, or something I can try and keep an eye on how hot the amp is running under this low load. I think these amps were overbuilt to withstand the rigors of commercial service, but I certainly do not want to blow the output transformers. If it turns out that I will most surely damage the amps doing this, is there a way I could fake a 12 or greater ohm load with the same speakers and not sacrifice too much performance.Thank you for any suggestions, I always get stuck in wierd impedance problems!
