Hello Sidegetter! The EI factory is in Nis/Serbia, and that is where they have always produced their valves. EI used to produce _for_ German and other European valve manufacturers, after these had reduced or shut down their production. Philips and Telefunken had valves produced by EI, mainly using phased-out Philips machinery and tooling - there is even a Philips typecode symbol for EI (Circle with dot)...
EI 'made in Germany' is a little liberal with facts, me thinks, but to my memory was used by factory or importers of EI valves in the seventies and later to enhance sales figures...
Though I do recall that EI did produce a _real_ 7189 - which were used in quantity in military gear by NATO member states - usually reboxed by Philips and Telefunken. I still have a Tektronix power pulse generator with four of them in the output stage - and sixteen more in a spares kit. They _do_ work well - and are stressed well beyond EL84 levels in the Tek.
About sound and quality of current production I cannot make any statement, though.
