Dr.P -I am having a ball building a version of Roscoe Primrose's 45 amp. This is a direct coupled design using a 417a as a driver. The parts count is low and the relationships between the various elements are easily grasped. The basic circuit will allow many variations eg. Phil Sieg's Roscoes featured in Valve a couple of issues back. My take on it is an all choke loaded parafeed version with a 6D22S rectified 2 choke power supply (see a pattern here?).
Once you learn the basics, the circuit can be easily modified to accept a constant current driver plate load, a 6N1P instead of a 417a driver etc. For that matter,it could easily be a 2A3 instead of a 45 with minor changes. You can try solid state diodes instead of tubes, reverse spike recovery filters etc.
I bought NOS 45s for $20.00 each, used milspec x-formers from a great guy I met on the web and other small parts from various web vendors.
Costs are therefore relatively low. This forum is a fantastic resource when you have questions.
Good luck!
Seth
