I also have a similar background to yours. I had at one time invested around $3500 in my car system (100% DIY also). My first recommendation is to sell the majority of it. Keep a component set in front, coaxials for rear fill, a nice reciever and some amps. I brought mine down to a Nakamichi 45z reciever, and MTX Thunder amps. Bi-amped component fronts and some coaxials mounted in the backseat (yes, mounted IN the backseat, firing forward)
After gleaning $1200 from resale of all the extras (12" and 15" subwoofers, monster amps, custom cabling and interconnects, processors, etc) there was plenty to use for digging my heels into a nice setup for home. At least consider kicking down some of the car gear, it will be MUCH more rewarding to do critical listening at home when you finally do get the time.
$400 is really hard to work with for an amp. Maybe NAD used or Jolida.
