There are a zillion threads on this topic in the archives. To get you started, however, my experience is that the EI (Type 3) KT-90 has a less warm, "tubey" sound than the KT-88 and can sound a bit stringent in the upper mids, but has slightly tighter bass. In some systems and rooms, it may be ideal. The Svetlana KT-88, which I now use, has more of a classic warm tube sound and look. 6550's are known to be somewhere in between. Check the archives for more specific discussions of the various types of 6550 type tubes. Oh, KT-90's and KT-88's are interchangeable. Power output will not vary greatly.
