As long as the GZ34 / 5AR4 is functioning properly, it is only converting AC to DC current. It does so much more cleanly than a diode bridge will. Even the inexpensive Chinese 5AR4's do a good job, but with reduced durability. Others may disagree, but difference in sound is not an issue with me regarding GZ-34/5AR4's. A properly designed diode setup can be excellent, but there are a lot of noisy diode rectification systens out there.
The 7199 is another story. There is a big difference in sound quality from brand to brand. I'm not going to drive up the prices of my favorite brand by publicly proclaiming their supperiority. Your opinion may be different than mine anyway. I have three ST-70's and an SCA-35, so I have an interest in keeping the 7199 prices reasonable.
