Phantom,Try a new set of 12AX7's in your unit and see if there is any difference. If the gain is "re-gained" (sorry, about the pun)---your present 12AX7's are probably tired.
If no difference (still low gain)---the Safari begins. I try to work from the top (power transformer), power supply, down through the pre-amp stages, splitter, buffer, then the power tubes. Finally, the output transformer. In general.
