The subject of matching tubes is well covered by the Radiotron Designer's Handbook #4, pages 580-584.If anyone would like a PDF file of these pages email me and I'll send it directly. It's about a 282K file and is in ADOBE pdf format so you'll need the reader.
There is also a cute bias meter that measures plate current in the November 2000 issue of Poptronics. It plugs directly into most amps and will let you assess plate current at "real" voltages for tubes having the plate attached to pin 8 of an octal socket. It is trivial to adapt the circuit to other pinouts as well.
The tubes I've purchased from Ned Carlson as matched sets, were in fact well matched on testing here.
