Hi C. W.,Yes, you could change one of the stages into a cathode follower. You'd give up a lot of signal gain, though. The gain of the phono stage would drop by about 33dB. A 5mV 1kHz input signal would get amplified to about 220mV - not enough to drive a power amplifier to full power. But when followed by the SA-7's 6922-based line stage, which has 24dB of gain, you'd have 3.5V of signal available with the volume control turned all the way up. That may be enough for satisfactory listening.
I think that the second stage of the phono section be the one converted to a cathode-follower. Leave the first stage as-is, so it will raise the cartridge's signal well above the noise floor inherent to the high-impedance passive RIAA de-emphasis network.
NOTE: I've not tried any of this. The resulting gain may be too low. I have no idea what values of parts I'd use for this modification. If you contact me privately at audio@altavistaaudio.com, I'd be happy to discuss this as a custom modification. Or, someone else on the group might want to tackle this?
Best of luck!
Mike Elliott
