Nikko,I never owned a Melos preamp, but have read many posts on boards scattered over the WWW and if they are on target, the Melos pre's are very well regarded with respect to both build quality and performance. These pre's apparently are more apt to yield long tube life and very praiseworthy results. However, you should be aware that many posts also were extremely negative regarding obtaining service from the Mfr. even before the Mfr. shut down abruptly.
Personally, I'd be delighted to take my chances with any of the Melos preamps in my system both for control and for headphone listening.
I can't comment on the tube substitution.
