What got me interested in the new Retro was that Eve Anna Manley actually admitted in public (on her own company's web page) that the old Retro's REALLY sucked, and she had her engineering staff make massive changes to David's poor design. The concept sounds excellent, but the execution of the design in the old version was apparently very poor.I am willing to give the completely revamped version a chance to prove itself, because the versatilty of such a design would be wonderful. But, perhaps, it's necessary compromises are too great, and it will be a mediocre SET amp and a mediocre PP amp. (Can the same output transformers really work for SE and PP modes? Or must one mode be sacrificed in quality?) The real-time variable feedback switch is a known positive, and I plan to try it on a DIY or "tweaker" amp myself.
Only time and real auditioning will tell if the changes make it the Retros good amps.
