Though I am fairly inexperienced, I'll try to give some positive info. I have found that the best bang for the buck in something not too difficult to find is: Amperex 6DJ8, made in Holland, orange Globe logo, A-frame. A NOS matched pair would probably cost ~$75. IMO these are not that far off from a US Amperex 6922 PQ from mid-'60s that costs about twice as much. Still, both of these are "boutique" tubes and they won't get cheaper or easier to get, like anything NOS. I'll say they are very worthwhile, and blow the current Sovtek 6922 away. Contrary to what you might infer from many posts, there _are_ NOS tubes that IMO are inferior sounding to the Sovtek. You do seem to get what you pay for in these tubes, but again IMO the above 6DJ8 is at the diminishing returns boundary. Oh yeah, do not be afraid to buy slightly used/tests like new from a reputable vendor. Just be wary of high-priced tubes that are really just selected/tested/treated Sovteks with a different label. The tube construction makes a difference to the sound, and no amount of testing/selection will change that inherent characteristic. Hope this helps a bit.
