Can anybody tell me the difference between 5814 and 6189?!

131.176.183.182

Both valves are supposed to be special-quality versions of the ECC82/12AU7.

I could not find complete original datasheets in paper or online, and the short form information found is inconclusive - some publications contradict each other w. r. t. crucial data.

As one of my amps uses ECC82 in phase splitter/differential amp stages, over time I have acquired a number of 'family members' - did some 'valve rolling' and measured all of them on a curve tracer - even for samples measuring equal and with good pair symmetry, sonic differences are quite significant.

I have several MIL NOS valves labeled 5814A and 6189A of equal manufacture that are - to my perception - 'carbon copies' of each other - bulb all internal features look equal, curve tracer plot and sound are very close - brand label is Sylvania (green label, made in USA, plus etched number. All came in typical white MIL boxes, and 'seventies date code...

In my opinion they are similar valves with different type labels.

Now some people tell me that the spec for 5814A is significantly different from 6189A - now I am looking for datasheets and definitive answers w. r. t. 'official' spec - ANY 'expert' comment is welcome...

Many thanks in advance!!!

PS: In reply to another thread on the ECC82 sound subject: my favourites are Telefunken ECC802S - I have two pairs of them, taken out of a military spare parts kit box - unfortunately they are a bit too expensive to replace nowadays. Therefore I do most of the listening on Valvo 6189s - they are not as 'smooth'as the Telefunkens but have a nice balance, and boost the perceived low bass of my maggies a little...
