Yes, it might be a front end tube starting to go bad. But, maybe you should rule-out any electrical appliance at intermittently turns on for a period of time. Then, turns off.

My system (2 x 500 watt SAE's with a Perreaux pre-amp) had this weird tendency to produce a low-level buzz or hum, intermittently, on the left side. Ends up I have an outdoor Mercury light. These lights seem to occassionally charge up, then revert back to a lower current draw. Well, they must also emit some kind of RFI during the "charging" period. And it seemed that my Perreaux's left channel must have acted as an antenna of sorts (it was closer to the outdoor light than the right side, at least electro-magnetically. Or the left side was more sensitive---whatever)---because the hum corresponded to the light charging up.

I kinda figure this out when I noticed that the noise didn't occur during the day. Anyhow, by moving the pre-amp a few feet away from the interior position of the wall which matched where the exterior light was, eliminated the problem.

I think that since the Perreaux is Class A and the amps were fairly powerful, any extraneous noise is made quite noticeable. Odd how it only affected one channel, though.
