Re: Bill what would you recommend out of the three?

Hi Walter,

All three testers will test the 5Y3, and all three use the 5Y3 and an 83 internally for rectification. The most feature-rich is the 539C, and also the most pricey when you find one in good shape. It has the added ability to do cursory noise testing, in that you can hook up the antenna inputs of a tuner or receiver and listen for noise. Not sure how well that part of it works, or whether it has any real value - I never tried it with mine when I had it. Neither the 800 or the 6000 offer that though. The 6000 has one nice feature over the 800: neon lights to indicate shorts. With the 800, there is a knob that has to be rotated through 4 positions to test for shorts, and with the 6000 all you have to do is look and make sure the neons are lit. Other than that, the 6000 and 800 work quite similarily, and I actually prefer either of those to the 539C - easier to use, and they seem to be just as accurate. My suggestion would be to look for condition first - is the faceplate clean, absent of wear marks (indicating heavy use), and is all the documentation included (a tester without a manual and a roll chart is your basic boat anchor). After that, pick whichever fits your budget, knowing that the 6000's and 800's can normally be had for quite a bit less money.
