Anybody using 6N27P as a replacement for 6GM8?

I built an Aikido many years ago already with the original board in the manner that John Broskie speculated should work for 6GM8 with a single 24v power supply. He hadn't tried it himself at that point. I built it that way and it indeed did work and worked well, so well that he eventually sold it that way.

The problem now is that since it became a commercial product the supply of 6GM8 tubes has gone up in price. I bought my original quad of Amperex bugle boys for $5/each, on sale from $6 since nobody used them for anything. I bought a second quad of GE as well a little later for a similar price. Well, I'm looking for a new set of tubes now and they are expensive! Not crazy expensive to buy, like a pair of WE300b, but still a lot more.

That brings me to the Soviet tubes. The 6N27P is supposed to be equivalent. Is it really? Or is it just close? And do they sound good? I've used 6N6P as a replacement for 6DJ8 and they work but take more current and aren't exactly the same. They have a much more forward sound in my amp when I use them. Are the 6N27P closer to 6GM8 than that example? But the other thing is they aren't exactly cheap either, only a little less than the 6GM8. The 6N6P tubes go for about $5/each themselves and you can buy them in bulk from Ukraine or Russia but not these.

So the real question is are these 6N27P tubes good on their own merits? Or will I be disappointed?

I guess low voltage tubes never took off since neither are in high supply. A car radio was much better off with transistors. And was the GM designation for General Motors? I always wondered, or was that just random?
