Just use 12AT7s! The 12AU7 is non-linear and its electrical parameters are dead wrong. While damage is unlikely, poor performance is all but certain.

If the price of OS 'T7s makes you wince, try JJ's current production variant. Good things have been said about it by somebody quite knowledgeable.
