We've modified a pair of MC30s and a pair of MC40s to use the 6CG7 instead of the 12AU7 to great success.
If you like it (and you will) ditch the adapter. You just need to rewire the socket slightly. The plate, grid, and cathode pins are the same in the two tubes. The 12AU7 has a center-tapped heater: Pins 4 and 5 are the "outside" pins and pin 9 is the center tap. You just need to move the wire on pin 9 to pin 4 (or 5) and break the connection to the other pin.
The 6CG7 draws more heater current than the 12AU7, but the power transformer can supply it.
