6J6 driver tube suggestions?

I'm unabashedly a tube noob; I'm sure I'll have some questions about a modest tube headphone amplifier in the mail, that might benefit from a better pair of 6J6 driver tubes to begin with. I have no idea what to look for in terms of the basics, and how to better identify options that are said to have various sonic signatures, of which I'm sure I'll be interested in exploring. Any do's and don'ts about tubes would be appreciated.

Might there be a matter of synergy when specific driver tubes are mated with particular power tubes? I'd like to start-out with a pair of inexpensive 6J6 driver tubes.

If I were offered an affordable option to consider, I might like a tube that presents a sonic signature with tight bass, lively highs, and a more laid back presence that might help mitigate a shouty midrange characteristic. Getting the tonality right is most important at this point vs. a more refined performance level. Maybe GE or Mullard?
