Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

The funky deposits fooled a lot of people

When i first started collecting tube audio, i could mostly afford el84 based amps. Mullard was one of the largest producers of el84 and probably out competed the other tube makers on price. Hence their tubes were in most of the early amps, like EICO, heathkit, Fisher, etc. Many of these amps went for sale on ebay with the sellers describing the tubes as looking to be defective and so the amp was sold as is. Of course, this was totally untrue and the vast majority of the el84 were perfectly good. This is how i got many of my rX1 and X2 el84. Maybe they got flack for this appearance on the tubes and that a forced a switch in the metallurgy to the non staining el84.
