Those are "potato masher" 5R4s. They were developed for use in B52 bombers. The construction employed allows the rectifiers to function correctly at 50,000 feet of altitude.
They will drop right into any equipment that uses 5R4s.
Another use of the "bottles" is to drop the B+ rail voltage, where today's high average AC mains voltage is causing difficulty. At the rated 250 mA., the forward drop in a 5R4 is a whopping 67 V.
