Some (especially those made to sell in the US have both designations.
You are correct that the big bottle 6CA7 is a beam power tube, whereas the skinny bottle EL34 is a true pentode, yet they can interchange in some a
amps.
I have found that the large bottle 6CA7 needs more negative grid voltage to attain the same plate current.
Also, the 6CA7 seems to hold up better in some amps that run high plate voltage (>500V). I assume this is because of the larger internal structure with more space between elememts inside.
