Questions about tubes and gear that glows. FAQ

Disbelieving rectifiers sound different is like disbelieving audio tubes sound different.......

Come on now ! Rectifiers yield sonic signatures in spite of the slight voltage differences. Just like differing audio tubes' construction, some differences not being visible with our eyes, it is unarguable that various structures cause differing sonic signatures.

Let us take just a slight tour into the world of the GZ-34/5AR4. Anyone who has heard the now very rare, original metal based versions or any of the "double D getter" versions, as opposed to the later "single halo getter" versions of this rectifier will instantly recognize which of these is the better sounding. It is not simply voltage differences.

If you have the many GZ34 versions on hand, then try each type and check the voltages, I promise you all that the sonics will differ, even among similar voltage resulting tubes.

If we all easily agree that different version 12AX7s (or 6DJ8s or any of your fave audio signal tubes) sound different, why is it a common misconception that differing construction within rectifiers would not also cause differing sounds ?

Without comparing dollar values or demand or seller preferences, is it that difficult to imagine why so many tube folks collect different versions of the same tubes ? The lowest common denominator is simple; it is the sound of the various devices...There is so much about our hobby that simple theories cannot explain. Believing the differing sonics of different types of the same rectifiers is caused by slight voltage difference arises from either simple, unintended ignorance, denial or stubbornness. Of course, sellers who push certain easily available types might have their own agenda. However, we are talking about a limited demand of items desired within a very limited audience...
