My once were LEAK Stereo 20s have NOS Australian made 6CG7 splitter drivers with a single FET CCS which replaced 12AX7s, and the input twin triode is a 6DJ8, so no 12AX7s in them now. The output valves are EL84Ms, giving 20wpc in pentode. Why would I want to play around with EL84s and get less power?"They're not Leaks anymore." No and they sound a whole lot better.
I might add two CCS's to that input tube in each amp.
The pre is a once-was Allan Wright FVP aka 'four valve pre-amp,' but the two line stage 12AX7s have gone. The PSU has been upgraded with regulated HT/B+ and heaters/filaments. The line/gain stage valve is a 12AT7 and the opt Cathode Follower is a 12AU7 (gain of 0.9 times but low output Z. The RIAA stage is two 12AX7s with passive RIAA to +/- 0.5db.
The 12AT7 replaced a 12AU7. The only way I'll ever use a 12AU7 again is in gain-less follower mode. Cheap and faultless.
The VC in front of the opt CFollower is an Alps Blue.
I listen to mostly classical music, which is the only stuff I use to judge the sound, and have been very happy.
When I last had a pr of 63s on loan, they were somewhat better than my old spheres musically and more definite about a recording's engineering, yet without me being as bothered by it*.
LBNL I have a tiny budget for audio as I'm retired. Even within audio I'd rather work on the room's effects on the sound I get, where I pretty much have to sit anyway, and buy more recordings. Stereo 'Swarm' DIY subs with 1/3rd octave eq will fix the room's main problems and dipoles are less room affected anyway.
The only thing I'd like to have is a tilt control like some QUAD pre-amps have. There's a kit for that which I believe can be made to fit my Pre's OEM box from a QUAD 22.
? recordings even simple stereo classical ones still vary in tonal balance. More are too bright than the other way, but a tilt control fixes either type.
I may one day buy Mini-DSP boxes, when they get around to providing polarity switching.
