I'll be straight with you. The correct answer as I understood it was exactly what you said. It was the instrument and pro audio elements of the tube audio business that kept it alive. The majority of that was indeed guitar head amps (not headphone amps please!). This kept the industry afloat while the home tube audiophile faction was being cultivated and encouraged by the tubophile heroes, mentioned elsewhere in this thread. Recall that each had a stump to reach people from.
In the present day, I think the home audio buyer is a very important group indeed. It is my personal belief that the current production Gold Lion tubes are voiced for home audio playback. I imagine that what sounds good in one application should sound good in another one.
