Don't think there are tons of them in Rome, but searching "lavanderia self service" for your area should bring up a few.
Long story short: this used to be my MO when touring the US and taking photos when I was younger (met a lot of nice/interesting people).
Bars, eateries & open air markets hardly compete with a laundromat when looking for a sense of reality, IMO.
