The amp with the TO-330 was capable of greater measured power output at a given distortion level, had a wider measured frequency response and a faster measured rise time than the exact basic circuit using the Chicago OPT. Sound quality inferiority of the Acro OPT is a relatively recent development and is probably as much as anything the result of a "David vs Goliath" mentality. YMMV
