RE: TubeAcolyte ---- 400PS

"I understand and won't disagree. It's old school, and it's not always economically viable. But in my opinion, novelty of using a 400PS on stage aside, I've found it sounds better (more direct, more engrossing) than most PA system setups unless you're paying top dollar for equipment..."

I have no idea what you mean about, "top dollar for equipment" but there is no reason to have a gigantor bass rig these days.

If you have a big stage, you'll have a house FOH system. And the FOH guy doesn't want you to play Entwistle. If you've ever played a gig bigger than the local Moose Lodge, you'd know that.

If you're playing a small lounge, a combo amp is plenty.

Schlepping big gear is a losing game. Schlepping unreliable gear is even worse.

You're right, no one uses my setup with 3 cabs (and frankly, ya, carrying that around is ridiculous, so I seldom go all out and opt for 1-2 cabs). However, it's effect on the crowd outweighs the cons. I'd whip out my setup every time if I could.

No one in an audience cares how big your bass rig is except you.

The bar manager wants you to be able to get people dancing.

Mustang Sally gets the guys away from the pool table and gets the ladies dancing. Guaranteed.

I'm not going to share the rest of our set list. But it gets the ladies dancing and flashing, and that makes for bar sales.

So you can have the world's biggest bass rig in your basement, but no one cares.

If you want to gig, you need to learn your instrument, learn what makes people dance, and learn what gets you invited back.

Otherwise, you can build the world's biggest basement bass rig and wank away.
