Pry those transformers out first. I'm sure you can build something more reliable with them.
As for the SVT & 8x10, yes it was a bit limited for serious oomph. And I suspect derived from the "sweet sixteen" design offered in an early 60's Popular Electronics. However, many's the time I got to see Jack Casady with a dozen or so 18" - probably K151 JBL - powered by 3 or 4 SVT - and that rig was by far not lacking in 40 Hz wallop whether indoors or out. Choice of speakers is important. Why force 10's to that task, no matter how "specially designed", when 18's reproduce that part of the spectrum with far less strain.
