Again, the upper mica sheet was added to avoid contamination of the cathodes from the getters being flashed. The third mica became sort of superfluous with improved cathode coatings and manufacturing processes, including flashing the tubes upside down so that any getter flash fell away from the cathodes.
There are other ways, yet, of avoiding the cathode contamination. You place the getters on the side or on the bottom. Side getters are seen on certain tubes and they generally have a more open top end (Some say too bright). A good tube example is the those big potato mashers 5R4W's. they are available often by the same manufacturer in a top, bottom, or side getter. A sonic comparison of them reveals that that order has increasing amounts of upper frequency extension.
