RE: Weird pressure in my ears?

Is this the same as bass pressure, as when a room is filled with bass and resonating, or is it more like a sensation of your ears being "forced" to listen? If your ears ever "pick up" when you are in a quiet space and are interrupted by a loud noise, this is what I'm referring to. With oscillations this can create a forced tension over time that cause ear fatigue. The amp itself may sound good, but high frequency oscillations above the range of hearing can inject this irritating sensation.

If this is what you are experiencing, check your B+ voltage to be sure you are at the right level and check that your tubes are biased correctly. If your amp has feedback from the output transformers, you can check to be sure the leads on each going to the output tube plates are correct (otherwise you can get positive feedback). You could also try connecting grid stopper resistors (say 1KOhm) to the tube grids.

If stoppers are already there or you can't get to the grid pins to install, you could try a 540pf mica capacitor from your "positive" speaker outputs to signal ground, one on each channel. (This would be the speaker terminal that is NOT already grounded or connected to the "common" lead of your output transformer, and it may have a red binding post).

Another weird possibility is that you have a TV other other device in the room that is delivering a high pitched oscillation.

Just some thoughts to consider.

Regards,

--Jeff
