Thank you for you comments IT
"More influential, to the sound, is the early DHT use of all glass insulation inside; as opposed to using mica insulation" interesting
"Finding a matched quad of VT25 or VT52 or even 245 Raytheon DHTs is now a rare experience..." I have 2 or had 2 quads of nos Sylvania 10y but not matched I managed to stuff one so I need to find one nos one real soon to make the quad again before its too late.
If the 4 pillar are not too different. I wont worry about buying any.
I have dreamed of building a pp 10y or maybe better still a parallel 10y SE amp for 8 years now. Back then they where 60$ a piece on ebay nos! I think it would be a awesome amp but I cant imagine flicking the switch too often once I was finished the amp. There just too expensive for me to be burning up 4 at a time. Not that I have tried new dht's yet but I believe from what I read here they can be as good so.It seems no new tube manufacturer is bothering with TT filaments though unfortunately.
These la's are just hopefully new. I have no illusions about matching. I will be lucky if they still work. I am looking more and more to dhp's in the hope to find a nice sounding tubes I can afford to find 8 nos or 2 matched quads even. These interestingly have round plates as opposed to the usual flat plate. They do have a square cathode structure though I think. Maybe they are a little 71a like tube wired for triode.
I have just picked up a untested px4 cheap nr55 shinny nickel plate. In the hope to try it in my mono. I started reading up on British dht's. I use a pt15 amp but the tubes have got too dear in 12 months since I built it. And I am out of them. Last two burning. I don't like the British pins I believe they could be inferior to the ux4/5's. And the navy ceramic base I like less.
I am also concerned about the barium vapor (azide) process that came before oxide. I am thinking it might be best to the draw the line there. I wonder if they sound as murchy as they look? No mica but is it worth the aside? Its curious as Western electric never seemed to have to resort to it. I think I am delving into the British tubes simply because the Asian ebayers seem to like them less. Probably a good reason for that though.
I would love to go to ham swap meets over in your USA land of plenty it would be almost worth the plane tickets one day when hit the lottery or something :)
edit I had to remove the picture as it has the sellers id in it which he not appreciate.. wow I can mod in paint haha
