I've had the opposite experience with the Brimar 13D5's. They are very clear, clean, quick and musical in the circuits I've tried them in. You are so right about system synergy. Room acoustics are going to be a major factor, too. With tubes, you just don't know for sure until you've heard them yourself in your system. The rare, hyped and pricey tube might sound just okay, while the $5 new-production Chinese tube might be the perfect fit sonically.
